Post subject:  Live Tour Artilleryman Chosen

JWM have now chosen the person who will play the Artilleryman in the Live Tour of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds in April this year.
Alexis James is the man who beat some worthy competition to the important role of the Artilleryman, a man with big dreams for rebuilding a new society as the Martians destroy the old.

Alexis has an impressive musical, theatre and TV background and here is a brief biography of his achievements so far.

Alexis was part of the HTV drama workshop in South Wales before moving to London to attend the BRIT School of Performing Arts. His West End debut was playing the Narrator ‘Gringoire’ in Notre Dame De Paris as part of the original cast at the Dominion Theatre. He then created the role of ‘Tybalt’ in Romeo et Juliette -The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre. His trio of French musicals was completed by appearing in Les Miserables understudying and playing the Student Leader ‘Enjolras’, including the final performance at the Palace Theatre and the rebirth, under John Cairds direction, at the Queens Theatre. During this, he was fortunate enough to appear alongside Dame Judi Dench for one night only!!
Other theatre credits include: Broken Journey, Viva Ibiza, Romancing, Walk With The Angels, A Life in the Daze of Stanley Bishop and A Generation Arises.

TV credits include: Mike Bassett England Manager (BBC), A Dance to the Music of Time (Channel 4); A Generation Arises (BBC Wales); The Tribe (Deep City Films)

Quote from the album:
....My fear rose at the sound of someone creeping into the house. Then I saw it was a young Artilleryman, weary, streaked with blood and dirt.

If David Essex came staggering on stage with his Zimmer-frame it would spoil the "young" part of that statement. He must be about 60 by now.

True. I assumed because, Burton won't be on stage then neither would any other speaking parts. Just singers. So if Hayward is the same character as Burton and he's there. It won't matter if Essex sings his song.

Yes a good point, but it might be confusing for anyone who doesn't know the musical version, to see someone acting the part and someone else singing it, because most of his lines are delivered in song but not all of them. it would be a case of "OK' so he's the Artilleryman, so who's the old guy hiding in the shadows singing his head off " :-k

But I'm asumising there will be no acting because Burton isn't there to act with. So all the voices will be the origional album recordings and the singers will come on stage and do there bits.
Getting the timing of the dialogue right on stage would be valmost impossible. As Cylinder, who did a live version of it, will tell you.

So isn't it going to be a dramatized play? I assumed it was.

They wouldn't need to interact with Burton as I thought Justin Hayward was playing the part of the journalist and it was only Burton's voice being used as a narrator of the story.

No, Justin Hayward is just singing Forever Atumn. All the narration and acting parts of the narrator are going to be Burton. So the discussions with the artillaryman, Beth and the Parson will not be acted out I wouldn't of thought. I think it would be a bad idea if they did. They really onl amount to a tiny part of the musical anyway. Most talking is narrating and not in the moment. Anyway I have my tickets for the 23 March so I'll let you know if your not going yourself.
