WWI actually hapened, but we still have books like "All quiet on the western front." WWII happened, and at all the fiction arround it! Look at all the focus our culture has placed on wars, and tradgeties, do you realy think it would be any different with a real-life WotW? If anything, it would make Sci-Fi even more popular because it now has that credibility that comes from being based on real events.

Many of the thing that SF authors have suggested in their books have actually come to pass Arthur C. Clarke predicted communication satellites and the internet, back in the 50s and 60s.

Sci Fi would still exist. But Alien invasion stories would not be SF, they'd be fiction, based on reality.
