Does anyone have any idea if Wells ever passed comment as regards any images
he may have seen about his book.........?

Yes, in the book itself, in the chapter ‘What we saw from the ruined house’, the Narrator writes:

‘I recall particularly the illustration of one of the first pamphlets to give a consecutive account of the war. The artist had evidently made a hasty study of one of the fighting-machines, and there his knowledge ended. He presented them as tilted, stiff tripods, without either flexibility or subtlety, and with an altogether misleading monotony of effect. The pamphlet containing these renderings had a considerable vogue, and I mention them here simply to warn the reader against the impression they may have created. They were no more like the Martians I saw in action than a Dutch doll is like a human being. To my mind, the pamphlet would have been much better without them.’

This was not in the Pearson’s serialisation, and was Wells’s less than enthusiastic response to Warwick Goble’s illustrations for the serial.

Later, he apparently praised Alvim-Correa’s depictions.

Struck ME as being a bit "tin man". Still, note the Thunder Child scene. Quite the monster battleship there.

Thats great, thanks very much for that.So technically speaking the real images of the Martians and their technology are Alvin Correa's pictures.I suppose thats as close as we are going to get to seeing Wells own minds eye as regards these things.Once again, many thanks to you gypsywlf and Mctod :)
