I am looking for colour and black & white pictures of British Military Uniforms from the period in which 'The War of the Worlds' is set (1900s).
It has to be the uniforms of soldiers stationed in Britain, I can find plenty of pictures of soldiers from the Boer war or stationed in Canada, India and Australia but very, very few in Britain.

If you can help, please post pictures or Links here :D

Thanks.

Shouldn't the uniforms throughout the Empire be more or less standardized? I can't think of anything that would need to be different beyond things like shoulder flashes or little badges that show the emblem of a given colony.

As far as I know, you can forget about "Redcoats", unless some unit got caught practicing for a parade or something in ceremonial uniforms. The Zulu War of the 1870s was the last war in which British infantry wore red uniforms in combat; after that, they switched to khaki.

That's what I thought. but Wells writes this in;

CHAPTER NINE
THE FIGHTING BEGINS

After breakfast, instead of working, I decided to walk down towards the common. Under the railway bridge I found a group of soldiers--sappers, I think, men in small round caps, dirty red jackets unbuttoned, and showing their blue shirts, dark trousers, and boots coming to the calf.

Would the common soldier wear the same "dirty red jackets" or was it just the sappers?
I have painted the soldier in my 'Invasion of Earth' Comic wearing Red, if anyone argues I can always say "He's a sapper" but I would have liked to get it right.

British Army uniforms didn't begin to be standardised until after the Second Boer War, although from the mid-nineteenth century colonial troops often wore varying shades of brown, green and drab. It's quite possible that at the end of the nineteenth century home troops wore red and other dress colours.

Thanks McTodd that's what I wanted to hear :D

I've been looking through other WOTWs comics to see how they handled this subject and I think The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is pretty much the same as I have done, so I think I'll stick with it.

Thanks for all your help, everybody. :D

Apparently Pendragon's version of War of the Worlds is great for refrencing uniforms. However if you copy a uniform then they'll see you in court. #-o
