In Christopher Priest's Wells-homage "The Space Machine" it's narrator, Edward Turnbull, considers the Martians using captured humans as slave labour. Earlier he and Amelia Fitzgbbon spend time as slaves on Mars: the Martians having enslaved it's humanoid population.

Wells had the Martians only see us as food, but the Martians wouldn't be foolish enough to kill off their food supply so there could be a havesting process. The elderly, sick and disabled would be discarded while the healthy would not only be kept for food, but also for breeding purposes and for tasks which the Martians could not do even with their technology.

Some slaves would work on the land to grow food and raise livestock while some could also be appointed controllers of slave camps. These controllers might have special privliges such as extra food and even harems. It wouldn't be surprising if the Artileryman ended up as one of these controllers: taking advantage to settle old scores.

If you wanted to start a resistance movement then it would be best from within - as Edward and Amelia do. You could deliberately give someone destined to be drained by the Martians a slow-acting virus or poison which would be lethal to Martians and would take affect once they had absorbed that person's blood.

That scenario has already been used in a short story by one of the members on this forum (I've forgotten his name, sorry) his character injected himself with a mixture of water and mould from stale bread before sacrificing his life.

something similar happens in Asylums version of War of the Worlds. A vaccination is injected into one of the aliens.
